my journeyman’s piece

“Around the world in 80 hours” – this was the topic given for the final piece of my apprenticeship. It gives a wide range for interpretation and also gives a nod to the amount of time that is given for the task.

I started sketching wheels, turbines, and I knew I wanted to focus on transportation. More so on depths of water and heights of air, similar to the mental state when traveling long distances in such a brutally short timespan. Multiple heights, bubbles and construction as a main motif.

The “turbines” at the front have actual ball bearings so they are able to spin. Movement does not only signify the travel around the world, but also passing of time – both points are found in the brief. The clasp stays within the design concept by keeping the mechanics exposed.
